AdVENTURE, 5th Grade December Unit, Early Colonists November 29, 2010 Dear AdVENTURE 5th Grade Students, As you have already learned, in the 1500s and 1600s many explorers were coming to North American from England, Spain, and France. From this exploration many settlers began to develop colonies. The settlers started building homes, churches, schools and businesses. Within the original 13 colonies, three distinct regions formed: the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. You will become an expert on one of these regions and use your knowledge of structural engineering to recreate a typical and authentic town for your chosen region. Week of 11/29 Step 1: Get into teams (team leader, materials manager, researcher, norms monitor) Step 2: Develop a team workplan (who will do what by when) Step 3: Conduct research and take notes (textbook, library books, netbooks) Week of 12/6 and 13 Step 4: Design and build your colony (be prepared to bring in all the materials you will need.) 12/16 Step 5: Share with the class Step 6: Rubric and assessment 12/17 Step 7: Share with your family at open house (time, tbd) (12/15 states and capitals quiz for southeast states) This project is a great way to demonstrate the 21st Century Skills of responsibility, productivity, accountability, communication, collaboration, and creativity. It also allows you to bring together your understanding of history and structural engineering. Overall, a great way to end our first semester together! Thank you, Mrs. Fitch

Dear AdVENTURE 5th Grade Students,
As you have already learned, in the 1500s and 1600s many explorers were coming to North American from England, Spain, and France. From this exploration many settlers began to develop colonies. The settlers started building homes, churches, schools and businesses.
